HOLIDAYS NEXT WEEK.
POSITION IN DUN EDI N.
EMPLOYERS IN A QUANDARY.
[lit TELECIIAI'H. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Doneihn, Wednesday. A considerable amount of feeling exists among local tradespeople over the position in which they are placed in connection with tho holidays next week, Coronation Day and Prince of Wales' Birthday. The following trades must observe holiday on tho Princo of Wales' Birthday to conform, to tho Arbitration Court awards :Briclunakcrs, bakers and pastrycook®, carters, tinsmiths, butchers, Christchurch Meat Company, and hairdressers, tho last-named from noon. Gas-stokers may observe holiday on the 23rd, or on tho day of tho annual picnic, while in some instances, except in the case of butchers and hairdressers, employees may work on payment of extra rates.
The Employers' Association sent a telegram to the Hon. J. A. Millar to-day pointing out that tho Labour Department had intimated its intention to prosecute all working under awards who failed to close on tho 23rd, and expressing a fear that this attitude would mean a non-obser-vance of Coronation Day. At a meeting to-day the master butchers unanimously decided to keep their premises open on Coronation Day owing to the compulsion to close on the 23rd. It is understood that the Carters' Association has decided to observe holiday on Coronation Day instead of on the 23rd. A copy of the telegram sent by the Employers' Association to the Hon. J. A. Millar with reference to the observance of holidays next week was laid before the City Council to-night, and after discussion it was decided to telegraph to the Minister suggesting that the Coronation celebrations be held on the Prince of Wales's Birthday.
