SERVICE AT SEA.

NAVY LEAGUE'S OBJECT.

General Godlky, replying to a recent, inquiry by the Wellington hon. secretary of the Navy League, says:—"The question of service at sea. in lieu of train-i ing under the Defence Act cannot ati present receive consideration. Neither does the Defence Act admit of such an) alternative, nor does the machinery exist' for applying such an alternative, even if it were allowed."

In a, later communication written oil behalf of the commandant, LieutenantColonel Burnett Stuart says :--" You will, 1 hope, appreciate the impossibility of our being able at present to arrange for any; training mi the lines you suggest, much as} we should like to do so. Not only would an alteration in the Act be necessary to' enable your proposals to be carried out,' but' absolutely no facilities exist for the! performance of any standardised training at sea. which could be considered . tho equivalent of the training required under the Act. I know the general hopes that the Amokura will form its own unit of senior cadets, lie is very interested in the work of the Navy League, whose objects are identical with those- to which the Dominion litis given expression in the Defence Act, and.be looks confidently to its help in spreading the doctrine of patriotism and "self-sacrifice amongst the youth of New Zealand."
