A GIRL'S EVIL WAYS.

DRUNKEN FATHER'S NEGLECT. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRisTcmmcH, Saturday. A case marked by soma shocking features cam© before Mr. Bishop, S.M., at the Juvenile Court to-day, when a 14-year-old girl was charged with not being under proper control. The father of the girl is subjeg*4*> a prohibition order, but apparently dflfi* not obey it, as his demeanour in Court drew from the magistrate and the police the opinion that he was under the influence of liquor. The mother is a respectable woman, and it was when she was absent at work that the girl fell into evil ways. Being left to her own resources she did as she pleased, and according to the police report she slept in a stable one night intsead of going home. In answer to questions from the magistrate, the girl admitted having misconducted herself with several Soys, whose ages ranged from 14 to 18 years of age. The mother of the girl said she knew nothing about these happenings, the girl never having mentioned them to her. She also expressed incredulity as to the statements of the girl, declaring that she was silly, and did not know what uhe "was saying. On being interrogated again by the magistrate, the girl repeated her story, and Mr. Bishop said he saw no reason to doubt it. It ! was a shocking thing, he said, that a child should be allowed to drift into evil ways in this fashion. There was no reflection on the mother, who was a hardworking woman, but it was her misfortune to have a ne'er-do-well husband. In referring to the apparent breach of tho prohibition order by the girl's father, Mr. Bishop declared that it was a scandal to the community that these orders should be treated as they were. Ho said he expected constables to do all in their power to see that these orders were respected, awl to exercise special supervision over cases of this kind. * The magistrate committed the girl to the Te Oranga Home, and made an order for the payment of 8» a week against the father, and instructed it to be registered against his property.
