DEATHS IN GAOL.

A i-aisoNER named James McKay, aged 57 years, died in the infirmary at the Auckland Gaol on Monday evening, and an inquest was held .on the body by the Coroner (Mr. T. Gresham) yesterday morning." H. McMurray, chief * warder, stated that deceased was sentenced to ten years" hard labour at the Supreme Court sessions of 1906, of charges of breaking and entering and forgery. Owing to his delicate health he had not done any hard labour for the • past four years, being occupied exclusively with clerical work. The gaol-surgeon (Dr. Murray) stated that he had attended McKay for influenza during last week, and had ordered his removal to the infirmary. Deceased's heart was very weak, and the .influenza would have a very serious effect upon it. Dr. De Give Lowe, who made a post-mortem examination of the body, staled that all the organs were more or less diseased, and the heart was in a specially bad condition. The condition of deceased's hands showed that he had done no hard work for a long time past. Death was due to long-standiag heart disease. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. Another prisoner ' Charles Mclnman, who was 'undergoing .:•, j sentence of three months for the; 'it i ' Whangarei, dropped dead suddenly :• > Tuesday evening. He had been employed 1 in the" cookhouse, and there was apparently no indication that anything was wrong with him. An inquest will be held at the gaol at ten o'clock this morning.
