ACCLIMATISATION CONTROL

NEW SOCIETY PROPOSED. OPPOSED BY A CONFERENCE. The proposed establishment of a separate acclimatisation district in the Waikato was discussed at a special meeting of the Council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society last evening. It was attended by delegates from many of the country districts. There were present: Messrs. W. H. Hazard (in the chair), F. Earl. J. Gillett, B. Noakes, R. H. Phillipson, D. King, D.', Leach, J. Wilson, W. Littleproud, J. Kernick, T. Kelly, J. Moorhouse, W. Willis, J. Elliott, A. J. Burrows, and Dr. Lewis. The president expressed the present position as already stated in these columns. Mr. F. Earl moved " That in the opinion of this meeting no good ground exists for any interference with the area at present constituting trie Auckland Acclimatisation district." He pointed to the work which the Auckland Society had carried out in spite of many difficulties and discouragements. They had established, the finest game fisheries South of the Line, and one, in respect to rainbow trout at all events, which had <i world-wide fame. The district was the only place in Australasia where there was good pheasantshooting, although it was not now "what it used to be, and they had quail-shoot-ing as good us any in the Dominion. It had been.'said they could have acclimatised other game birds; but it was a fact which many people were ignorant of, that game bird:; were not easily acclimatised. Many attempts had been made in this direction, and there had been many failures, so it was neither true nor fair to say that the Auckland Society had maladministered its fluids. His view was that if they could improve the pheasant and duck shooting, and give a reasonable protection to the quail they would have done a work which was all that could be expected. The Auckland Society had no interest* that were inimical or hostile to those of the country districts, and if it wore feasible, the monthly meetings of the society should be held occasionally in the country districts. (Hear, hear). The motion was seconded by Mr. Moorhouse (King Country), and carried unanimously. Mr. Moorhouse moved, and Mr. Burrows (Te Aroha) seconded, "That the country districts represented at this meeting are satisfiod with the administration of the Auckland Society, and strongly objects to become subject to the proposed Wa-ikato Society." This motion was also carried , unanimously, as was a further proposal by Mr J. Kernick (Thames)!, seconded by Mr. D Leach (Ohinemuri), that a petition be sent to the Minister expressing the views indicated by the previous resolutions.
