■'■.■■ WAITEMATA CLUB'S CARNIVAL, ; '~ } GOOD PERFORMANCES. J A number of good performances were put ] up by swimmers competing at the Albert-. ' street Baths It st evening, when the Wai- * temata Amateur Club held its ninth car- . nival. One of the most important events ' on an interesting programme was the at- ; tempt by C. Wolson (Waitemata) to slower i tho 220 yds New Zealand record, held by i M. E. Champion. Starting off well in the J early stages Welson seemed to tire towards • the end of the distance, but, keeping on gamely, he finished in 2m. 435., just four ; seconds behind Champion's best time. The ; 72yds club championship wont to A. O'Hare, , but. the time registered, 455., was comparatively slow. Champion has a local record : for this distanco of 42 3-ss. The carnival : was a most successful one, well-managed, : and well-attended. Results wore: — ■ > ' Novice Handicap, 36yds.—First heat: C. J. Marks, 1; Simon, 2. Second heat: E. Rutledge, 1; J. The Totalisator team beat Post and Telegraph. ' , , ;■ • Water Polo Match.— secretary s team ; (Welson, McQuillen, Gibbons, O'Hare, Stewart, Maher,. and Mulvihill) beat tho captain s by 3 goals to 1. . . ! ! Tim duck hunt which was hold at tho Waitemata Swimming Club's last sports meeting caused some adverse criticism, ■ and the officials- express regret that the item was included in tho programme. They were misled by the success of a similar item at a ladies' swimming sports, where the duck was the least timid of those in the water. Tho officials state that tho item will never be included in future carnival programmes. M. E. Champion, now en route to London, who is said to be a Channel aspirant, ' is a good stamp of long-distance swimmer, and is likely to make a bold bid for the honour. He has tho physique, for he is 13st, 61b in weight, and is about 6ft in height. He is 29 years of age. and has been swimming in competitions for nearly 10 years. The aspirant was born at Norfolk Island, and first raced as a member of a swimming' club connected with the North Shore Rowing Club. It is on record that one morning he swam from the North Shore Clubhouse, diagonally across the harbour to Judge's Bay, and then, after a rest of 10 minutes, returned to North Shore. Ho has been winning mile races with such ridiculous ease lately that it is certain he is in the best of condition, either for tho Festival of Empire Sports or the Channel swim.
