COMMONWEALTH IMPORTS.
It can do no harm and may do some good to keep in view the fact that times are prosperous in New Zealand for the same reason that they are prosperous in most parts of the world—because seasons are favourable and prices fair. Australia's imports increased last year by over £8,250,000 and her exports by nearly £9,200,000, the totals for 1910 being: Exports, . £74,500,000; Imports, £59,500,000. With this vast total trade of £134,000,000 the Australian population of less than 5,000,000 cannot but be highly prosperous. No misgovernment, as British peoples understand misgovernment, can interfere with the prosperity of States thus fruitful. Labour laws and Labour strikes and Labour Governments, however injurious or injudicious in themselves, do not check prosperity which is based upon an abundance of exchangeable goods, and a plentitu'de of acceptable currency. It is when abundance ceases, when currency is sparse, when every pressure is felt and every relief gratefully accepted, that poor government is known and good government appreciated.
