TAKING THE CENSUS.
PRELIMINARY WORK.
The position of chief census enumerator for the city of Auckland, the boroughs of Parnell, Newmarket, Onehunga, Mount Eden, Grey Lynn, the Comity of Eden, and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf and the Great and Little Barrier Islands, has been conferred on Sir. W. R. Holmes, accountant. The census will be taken on the night of Sunday, April 2, and Mr. Holmes's first duty will be to subdivide the district and appoint sub-enumerators, of whom from 75 to 100 will be required. Mr. .Holmes has previously filled this office, but he had then only the territory within the four boroughs adjoining the city. He will on this occasion be responsible for the agricultural statistics. It is expected that all the papers will be ready for distribution amongst - the subenumerators on the evening of Thursday, March 30, so that delivery may be completed by Saturday evening. The papers (should be filled in by the householders on Sunday evening, and will subsequently be collected. In connection with the agricultural statistics a second schedule will be left only in cases where there is one acre or more of land, as well as where the allotment is a-quarter of an acre or more with some portion in orchard.
