GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

WORK OF RENOVATION.

The Auckland Government House is ; now in the hands of a small army of carpenters, plumbers, drain-layers , and .other workmen. The building is > being overhauled -and renovated throughout. Owing to the vary sound condition of the building, there is not a : great ; deal for, the carpenters to do in repairs, despite the fact that the Minister for Public Works not so long ago : declared that the building was in a state of such decay that it needed pulling or burning down. "The Minister will be in Auckland ,in a lew , days, and,, doubtless, he will have .the pleasure of eating his words-—if he has not already done so. ■•-■;•■- ';■■>.':- '■-;■:- ' -'..

Some - additions are being. made to; the (servants'; quarters which have been somewhat cramped in the past. All the plumbing works and fittings of the building are being examined and : renewed " where necessary. : ':■ " New ' baths are being substituted for the .old ones on the . appearance of which - old ago < has left its mark. ~-.. An entirely new drainage system, connecting with the Symonds-street sewer, is also being put in, and \in view of : what happened at ~ the . new Government House at Wellington, - -special : attention -is being paid, to this work, which is being carried out on most up-to-date lines.
