CRICKET.

PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH.

The second Pluuket shield match of the season will be commenced at the Domain on Saturday afternoon, Canterbury playing Auckland. The Auckland cloven is now engaged in practice, and, as tho Southerners aro reported to have a strong team, a close and interesting match is promised. Tho Canterbury team will arrivo hero by the Main Trunk express to-morrow morning. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The feature of the Grafton-University match on Saturday was tho splendid firstwicket partnership for the former team by Horspool and MacCormick. Horspool gavo a brilliant display for 70, at times being most aggressive. He raised' the enthusiasm of the onlookers by scoring five successive boundaries off one over. He is to bo congratulated on obtaining a place in the representative team to meet Canterbury in the Plunket shield match, and should give a good account, of himself. MacCormick also played a fine innings. Ho obtained tho same total as Horspool, though he took two and ahalf hours to compile it. University's bowling was a queer mixture of good and bad, but their fielding was of a high order throughout. The students had lost two wickets for 33 when stumps were drawn. At the Domain the Parnell-North Shore match attracted most interest. North Shore won the toss, and opened on a good wicket, with a fast outfield. The second, wicket, Spence and Hadden, carried the score to 92 before a separation was effected. At this stage an unaccountable '■■'' rot" set in, four wickets going down for _ a couple _of runs. Hadden scored 43 by vigorous, cricket, his innings including two big hits for six. Bush and Kallender were the only remaining batsmen to make a stand. The latter knocked up 33 in 20 minutes in a stylo reminiscent of his early cricketing days.- One big hit for six was lifted well ovor the lino, where Wright got his hands on to tho' ball, but dropped it. North Shore's score of 160 was very poor under tho circumstances, thero being nothing in tho bowling to warrant such a mediocre display. ; Parnell, at tho end of the day's play, had 121 runs on the board for four wickets. Anthony scored freely, and looked like making a score. His downfall was due to an excellent throw-in by Hadden. , With Wright 30 not out, Parnell should have no difficulty; in establishing a lead on the first innings. Another round of matches played -under the Churches' Association was commenced on Saturday. In the senior A grade W.Y.M.I, met Mount Eden Baptists.- The former, taking first strike, opened with Pomeroy and Gesnell, who at once opened out with great freedom, 52 runs being scored off the first four overs, including four sixes, one five, and two fours. The innings produced 229 runs, the chief contributors being Gosnell (89), Pomeroy (46), Greenwood (18), Ready (17), A. Eyre (11), G. Eyre (10), and Lovell (16 not out). Mount Eden Baptists followed, and when play ceased had lost three wickets: for 58, Grindrod being 18 not out. In the Y.M.C.A.-Brotherhood match the latter, batting five short, made 22, to which Y.M.C.A.. replied with 150. Buckle (29), Bridges ?- (23), Fletcher (22), Cullimore (21), and Edmunds (36 not out). Bowling for Y.M.C.A. White took three wickets for six runs, and Edmunds one for 12. Considerable interest was shown in the meeting of All Saints' and St. John's. The latter are leading for the championship, but a three-point win to All Saints', would place them one' point ahead.' All 'Saints', batting first, were all sent back for 85, MoMath (21 not out), Fricker (18), and Nesbit (12) being the chief • scorers. ; St. John's fared;' even worse, being all : out for the small score of 63, McCowan. (18) being the only batsman to reach double figures. ; With a few minutes to go. All Saints' started their second innings, and had scored four runs without loss when the bell rang. "This match should provide a very interesting finish next Saturday.
