A DANGEROUS DOG.

OWNER PAYS DAMAGES.

At the Police Court yesterday morning, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., Margaret Cameron and Harold Coldtart were jointly charged with permitting a dangerous dog to bo at, large. The former is a, boardmghouse proprietress, and the latter is boarding at her place. Apparently there had been a joint ownership of the dog. A bottlegatherer who appeared for the prosecution gave an account of an encounter he had with the dog, and a police sergeant also gave the animal a most unfavourable character, stating that it had attacked him on one occasion when lie had called at the house. His Worship dismissed the charge against Airs. Cameron, and fined Coldtart 10s and 15s costs. A request from the bottlegatherer for the value of a new pair of trousers destroyed by the dog was also favourably entertained, Coldtart being ordered to pay him the amount of 7s 6d. THEFT OF A RING. - Daniel David Mann pleaded not guilty to a charge of. stealing a ring valued at *355, the property of Walter Zachariah Slaney, a Queen-street jeweller. It appeared that the ring had been recovered from a. second-hand dealer's shop, where the accused had pledged it in part payment for a suit of clothes. The accused stated that he had found the ring on the footpath at a time when he was in the employ of the City Council as a street cleaner. His Worship considered the explanation unsatisfactory and imposed a fine of £5 or in default one month's imprisonment. A WEAKNESS FOR FLOWERS. J. W. Taylor appeared in Court wearing a large buttonhole of fuchsias, and pleaded guilty to a charge of plucking flowers in Albert Park. It appeared that the floral display in Albert Park possessed a great fascination for him, and on a previous occasion the custodians had warned him against picking flowers. He was fined ,£2 and costs, or seven days' imprisonment. WHEN LOVERS FALL OUT. A young man named Thomas Robinson was charged with stealing a greenstone brooch valued at 12s 6d, the property of a young lady with whom he had been keeping company. It appeared that after a quarrel the accused had taken the young lady's brooch and had kept it. His Worship took a lenient view of the case and ordered accused to pay the costs and 12s 6d, the value of the brooch. THE INEBRIATES. Robert Ten da 11 and Annie Harris failed to put in an appearance, each forfeiting 20s bail. Three first offenders, one an old age pensioner, were convicted and discharged. Another first offender was convicted and fined ss. Alfred Langwell was ordered to pay 30s, medical expenses incurred. A MALICIOUS ACT. . * George and Elizabeth Keenan were charged with placing a tin containing objectionable matter in a water tank belonging to Henry Thomas Danzig, an Ellerslie resident. His Worship characterised the offence as a most serious one. Both the accused were convicted and fined £5 "and costs. . . George Keenan was also charged with assaulting Henry Thomas Danzig. On this charge he was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour. . . 7 ' MISCELLANEOUS. Thomas Turner, a sailor, was charged with stealing a bunch of rhubarb, valued at "sd,- the property of Ah Kong, also with using insulting language to the constable who arrested him. His Worship characterised the theft as the result of a drunken freak, and imposed a fine of £2, in default seven days.

V' Thomas Hunter, who procured, liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, was fined £2 and costs.

A charge of threatening • behaviour was preferred against Mrs. Sinclair and Mrs. Porter, residents of Victoria Lane. The accused were neighbours and had quarrelled. His Worship recorded a conviction against both the accused and fined them each £2, or seven days. ..
