LIQUOR ON DECEMBER 26.
. ANOTHER CASE IN- COURT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
• • Thames, Monday. Three men, named McClair, Watt, and Senior, were charged at the sitting of. the Magistrate's Court to-day with having been found on licensed premises on December 26, a day deemed to be Christmas Day. The men admitted being on the premises, but stated that they did not have any liquor, although they entered the premises for that purpose.' Mr. Clendon, for the defence, contended that there was no case to answer, as December 26 was not Christmas Day, but Boxing Day, notwithstanding the new Holiday Act, which,. he contended, did not apply to licensing matters. Mr. Clendon referred to the case of a similar nature recently tried at the West Coast, in which the Magistrate held that hotels could not be compelled to close their premises on Boxing Day. His Worship reserved decision on the point.
