HOME TEAM SCORES .348.

By Telegraph. —Piths Association,—Copyright. (Received December 31, 8 p.m.)

Mel bourne, December 31. The second test match between Australia, and South Africa began on tho Melbourne Cricket Ground this afternoon. The weather was fine and cool, and the wicket was good. The spectators numbered 16,000.

Clem Hill won the toss and decided to make first use of the wicket, opening with the New South Wales pan, Trumper and Bard sky. This brilliant pair soon settled down to work, and before half an hour had passed had 30 runs on the board. They carried tho score to the sixties before the first wicket fell, Trumper being the.first to go, losing his wicket alter he had made 34. Hill followed, and the two left-handers played brilliant cricket, scoring freely all round tlx* wicket. Sherwell tried seven bowlers, but all were treated alike by the batsmen, who punished all impartially, ■raising 144 before the luncheon adjournment without either losing his wicket. Bardsloy had then raised his total to 71, while Australia's captain had 35 against his name, the remaining four of the total being extras.

On resuming the aspect of the game changed and wickets fell fast. Bard si ey added another 14. runs and then lost his wicket.

Clem Hill soon followed, out for 39,

Gehrs, the other South' Australian representative, only made four, and then went out, four wickets being down for 173.

Macartney did little better than Gehrs, and retired with only seven on the Ward. Raneford and Armstrong than became associated, and playing good cricket ran the score along to 216 without a separation being effected, the left-hander's total being then 29 not out, while Armstrong was still going with 16 to his credit. A dissolution was effected when tho total had reached 220, Ransford being sent back to tho pavilion after scoring 58, Armstrong's tally being 32 not out. The others did little, and tho innings, which lasted two hours and six minutes, closed for 348.

• A sensation was provided by Nourse's dismissal of Whitty, which was one of the finest things soon in Melbourne. Far out on the square-leg boundary he ran some distance, leaped high in the air, and brought off an amazing one-handed catch. Tho crowd and players cheered enthusiastically.
