{Received January 1, 6 p.m.) • Brussels, December 31. An , explosion of half a ton of gun* powder occurred in the drying room of the National Magazine at Wetteren.
Eight men were blown to pieces and another was fatally injured. The neighbouring buildings were badly damaged.
The report of the explosion was heard many miles away.

Ottawa, December 31.
An explosion of a pom-pom. cartridge took place in the local Militia Department's stores. A staff-ser-geant was killed instantly, and two other men were wounded, one being seriously injured. The deceased was attempting to extract a bullet, when the cartridge exploded.
