MR. S, H. BUTCHER, M.P.

Samuel Henry Butcher was born at Dublin in 1850, the son of a former Bishop of Meath, ..and was educated, at Marlborough and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was Senior Classic and Chancellor's Medallist at his university, and obtained a fellowship of Trinity in 1874. He was lecturer at .his college for several years, and later was elected a fellow of university . college, Oxford, without examination. Since 1906 he - had represented Cambridge University as a Unionist member. Mr. Butcher was a distinguished man of letters and a recognised authority on Greek literature and the Irish agrarian problem. In conjunction with Mr. Andrew Lang,' he was responsible for a prose translation of the "Odyssey,'' and wrote several volumes upon classical literature. ' He was president of the British Academy of Letters in 1909.
