An inquest was held yesterday at the Courthouse, into the circumstances connected with the . death of an old man named William Andrews, whose body was found floating in the harbour early in the ; morning. The evidence showed that the deceased, who was 75 years of age, had "been admitted into the District Home, Tararu, last week. On the morning in question.one of the inmates who was working outside in the grounds, observed Andrew walking • towards the beach, and this was the last seen of him alive. When the body was found by the superintendent some two hours after, it was lying face downwards in about 24ft of . water. , A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was returned. ,

WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH.

A. woman named Mary Ann Heath., aged years, an old-age pensioner, was burned to death at about 2.20 o'clock this morning. She resided with her husband and two other women in a four-roomed house In Dowling-street, and when the fire was discovered her husband is alleged to have been more or less under the influence of "liquor. - Apparently the inmates of the house had been letting off fireworks earlier in the night. The origin of the fire .is a mystery.

The house was partly destroyed, and the brigade found the woman's charred remains behind the bedroom door. Her husband is suffering somewhat from shock, but not seriously.
