FARMERS AND POLITICS.

NEED FOR ORGANISATION.

[BY telegraph.—own correspondent.]

Christchurch, Sunday. At a meeting of the Ash burton branch of the Farmers' Union the following resolution was carried unanimously :—" That this branch supports' tho organisation of tho farmers for their own political protection." In the course of the discussion Mr. James Bland drew attention to the fact that when the Farmers' Union was first formed it was distinctly understood that they should not enter into party politics, and ho felt sure that directly they did so there would be a split., and they would want two farmers' •unions instead of one.

The chairman explained that they "were not asked to support party politics, but to support those principles which would best conduce to their interests as farmers.

Mr. Lill said if the farmers were not prepared to organise they had better be turned loose and let anyone kick them who liked to do so. It made him mad to think that the farmer begrudged 7s 6d a year to become a member of the Farmers' Union, when the workers readily paid Is 6d per week to their union. /
