MERRI KAWANA.

The Maori prophetess,- Merri. Kawana, continues to exerciue .strong control over a section of the native race. Great credence i;- given to her alleged capabilities to cure bodily ailments. On Sunday fully 600 visitors from all parts of the island were to be assembled at Parewanui, Bulls, •where Merri Kawana has been for some time., The prophetess was born on a ChriiAmas Day, and the anniversary this year was to be celebrated in lavish native fashion. For this purpose large quantities of stores ware in hand. It is stated that two of the native visitors each donated £100 towards the cost of the festive gathering. The visitors are accommodated in tents;, which are pitched in all directions over a large area, and a marquee is used as a meeting-house and messroom. A ■well-known Bulls resident informed a New Zealand Times representative that the natives were behaving in exemplary fashion, and peace and proper order prevailed.
