The steamer Afghanistan, under charter to the New Zealand Shipping 1 Company, arrived st Dunedin yesterday from London. ." The Tarawera left Wellington at 5 p.m. yesterday (or. The Huddart-Parker steamer Victoria sailed for • Sydney at 5.30 p.m. yesterday and is due to arrive at the New South Wales port on Friday next. The collier Kotuku left Westport at. 6 a.m. yesterday for Onehunga with a full load of coal, and is due at the West Coast port this afternoon. The Aparima, en route from Calcutta, left Singapore at 8 p.m. on Saturday for Samarang and Auckland. She is expected to arrive here about January 4. The Government steamer Hinemoa went out to the gulf yesterday morning' and returned to port lost night. She leaves this afternoon for the Northern lighthouses. Captain W. Faulis, late master of the HutfdartParker steamer Moorabool, has entered the Me!bourne pilot service, and Captain Dunsford has been appointed master of", the Moorabool. _ The Auckland passengers by the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Rotorua, which arrived at Wellington on Sunday from London, will reach Auckland by the Tarawera on Thursday. The Scales liner Clan Maclaren arrived from Geelomr, via Newcastle, early yesterday morning and berthed at the Railway 'Wharf. She left Geelong on November 30 and arrived at Newcastle on December 3. where she shipped 10C0 tons of coal for Napier. Leaving Newcastle on December 6, the vessel experienced fine weather, moderate to fresh southerly winds, and smooth tieas to arrival. Captain Shearer is in command, and has the following officers associated with him Chief otfeer, Mr W. Criehton; second, Mr. W. T. Wooldridge; third, Mr. A. P. Hammond. Mr. A. After discharge here the Clan MaeJaren proceeds to Napier and Wellington to load for London. CLAN. GRANT LEAVES BUNBURY. Advices received by the Scales Shipping Company state that the steamer Clan Grant left Bunbury for New Zealand ports on Thursday with a cargo of jnrrah. She is due at Wellington about a fortnight hence, and will subsequently load in the Dominion for Home. ANOTHER rrSER LINER SOLD. Advices to hand state that another of ' the Tyser Line's steamers (the Indradevi) has been sold by Mr. T. B. Royden, of Liverpool, to British owners. The Vessel in question is well known in New Zealand.waters, having been engaged in the London-New York-Australasian trade for a number of years. It will he remembered that the- Indrn devi suffered considerable damage by fire at Auckland some time back, a large part of 'her refrigerating machinery being destroyed. ■ A RACE TO SAN FRANCISCO. ' The American four-masted barouentine John C. Meyer and the four-masted schooner F. M. Slade, two of the smartest lumber-carriers employed in the trade between the Pacific Slope and Australia, commenced what should prove an exciting race to San Francisco from Newcastle on December 2. Both vessels are coal-laden, the former with 1318 tons from the Abermain Colliery and the latter with 1025 tons supplied from Messrs. .J. and A. Brown'? ; mines, and got away within, an hour of each other, the " Meyer" being the first to clear Nobbvs. In view of previous performances, Captain Murchison is confident, of his vessel reaching the Golden Gate first, but Captain Johnson, of the " Slade." has equal, .confidence in ■ the sailing capabilities of his ship, and is equally certain that lie will be the first to drop anchor in San Francisco Harbour. THE WARSHIPS. f The warships _ Powerful, Encounter, and Cambrian arrived in the gulf yesterday afternoon from Lyttelton. H.M. drill-ship Pioneer left portearly yesterday morning to meet the flagship and her consorts. It is announced that the Blackball Coal Company's collier Petone, . which has been a regular trader between Westport and Southern ports, has been purchased by the Canterbury Steamship Company.
