•.1 A letter was received from the Auckland Fire Board drawing attention to the , ' opinion expressed by the representatives of several insurance companies that the • late fire in Messrs. Potter and Co.'6 shop ms caused through a defective chimney in an adjoining building, the basement of which was occupied by the " Dive'' restaurant, the oven in the kitchen being against . .the dividing wall. It. had been found posV. sible to insert a two-foot piece of wire - through an opening in the wall into the ' chimney, and it was believed that it was dt this particular spot that the fire originated. The Council was asked to bring ■K" 7 tie matter under the notice of the proper - authorities. -The city engineer reported that the 7 Council had 110 power to take any action '■unthe matter, although the building in--7?7 cpertor was doing his best to induce the '-77- owner of the "Dive" to have the defect } <y remedied. In any case if proper precautions were taken in connection with the damaged '0&> portions of the adjoining premises there ;!§|. should be little or no risk of fire. It was decided to reply in the terms of vg#' tint engineer's report.
