AUCKLAND BANDS CRITICISED

Trouble has arisen recently between the Auckland Garrison Band and the Auckland Provincial Bands' Association, and the Garrison Band lias withdrawn from the association. The subject has been before the City Council, as the Garriison Band, wrote to the Council stating that the association had threatened that the band would be left out of the syllabus for the subsidised concerts. The association has also written to the Council, stating that the Garrison Band had seceded without sufficient- reason, and that only affiliated bands, were entitled to the benefits of the association. The Works Committee recommended the Council last night to authorise tho Mayor to arrange with the association only. « During the discussion on the matter, Mr. Read said that some of the Auckland bands played so badly that instead of receiving a subsidy for playing in the na-ncs they should pay for the privilege of being allowed to do so." They did not produce music at all, ' only discord. He moved that a com- 1 mittee of musicians should be set up to ] listen to a programme by each of the bands, j and decide.which were fit to receive a grant , from the Council. Certainly three of the 1 bands should not be allowed "to play in the t parks. But they seemed to have a ring j -for their mutual protection. The best 1 bands always drew the biggest crowds. s The Mayor said the size of the crowd 1 depended upon where the bands played, c There was always a large attendance at the * Albert Park. The bands had all improved I very much in the last two years. He was sorry the Garrison Band, which was a very + good one, had separated from the , associa- 1; tion; he had tried in vain to settle tho ( differences. . • ■ r Mr. Read's proposal was not seconded, i and the recommendation was adopted. * I
