I The Kaiser, in a speech at the Benedictine Monastery at Beuren, declared that the twentieth century had brought ideas which could only be effectively combatted by the help of ' religion. His Majesty added, " The crown I wear can only give me an assurance of success if based on the word and personality of Christ, and is a symbol thereof." Having given a crucifix to the > monastery, the Kaiser said: "You 5 must help to strengthen the religious sense inborn in the Germans, and increase their reverence towards the altar and the throne.
