DEATH OF INSPECTOR GOODWIN.
A NOTABLE CAREER. Mr. John S. Goodwin, for many years an inspector of State schools under the Auckland Board of Education, died suddenly at Otahuhu, early 'yesterday afternoon. He had been acting temporarily as inspector of Roman Catholic schools, and in this capacity attended the Convent at Otahuh,u yesterday. He went to Andrew and Andrew's livery stables to catch the one o'clock 'bus from Otahuhu to Auckland, and was found dead at the back of the premises, whither it is surmised he had gone for a drink of water. Dr. Robertson had attended the deceased, and, knowing him to have had a weak heart, has given a certificate as to the cause of death. An inquest is, therefore, deemed unnecessary. As an inspector, the late Mr. Goodwin possessed in the highest measure, the rare quality of getting the best out of the children he examined. He had the happy way of becoming at once the friend of the young people before him; and hundreds of men and women living to-day in Auckland and New Zealand, and many who have drifted to various quarters of the globe, can bear testimony of 'this fact. Mr. Goodwin, who was aged 63, was born in London, and came to New Zealand some 40 years ago. He was a schoolmaster at Thames and at Tauranga, and over 30 years ago became an inspector under the Auckland Board of Education. Two or three years ago, ill-health caused him to resign his inspectorship under the board, no member, of whose service was more highly thought of. The board's inspection of Roman Catholic schools occupies one or two months in the year, and it was on this work that Mr. Goodwin was temporarily engaged, so it may be said that, though he had retired, he died in harness. Deceased leaves a family of seven, three sons and four daughters.
