DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Devonport Borough Council mot. last, evening, (hose present being;: The Mayor (Mr. W. Handley) and Messrs. W. V. Timewell, ,H. Wilding, 0. W. Rnvenhill, J. Taylor, J. Mays, T. Considine, It.' 11. Fronde, and Captain Geo. MeKenzie. A letter was received from the Defence Department stating that there was no objection to the Council placing another reservoir on Mount Victoria, provided the Council would reciprocate by allowing the Department to obtain sand required for defence- purposes from Cheltenham Bench. The Mayor said ho did not approve; of such an arrangement. Ho thought it was a bit of blutf on the. part of the Department. The Council expressed the opinion that it could not reciprocate on account, of the objection raised by residents to the taking of sand, and the matter was left in the. hands of the Mayor to reply. It was decided to instruct the borough's solicitor to defend a Dovonport cabman, who is being proceeded against by the City Council for plying for hire in the city, when he only had a Devonport license, the object being to test whether a Devonport license is good in the city. Tito National Bank of New Zealand advised having disposed of 14 of the remaining debentures of the waterworks loan, and having credited the account with £1400. Notice was received from Messrs. Nicholson and Gribbin, on behalf of Mr. R. 11. Jtrougliton, who injured himself by falling on a broken culvert, stating that the claim for damages against the Council would be increased from £450 to £750. A petition was received urging that Highstreet, St. Leonards ltoad, and adjoining streets should be put in a proper state of repair. The. petition was referred to tho Street? and Works Committee. Three permits were granted for tho erection of new houses, and two for alterations and addi. tions to houses. It was decided to request the Auckland Marboor Board to repair the wharf at Hangitoto. It was decided to inform the Fire' Underwriters' Association, in reply to an inquiry, that there was ample pressure of water in the 4in main in King Edward Parade on the, occasion of the recent fire, and that, owing to the high north-east wind which was blowing, it was impossible to cone, with such an outbreak, however good the water supply.
