THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM.

CRITICISED AT GREY LYNN. The drainage system which is being carried out by the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board came in for some adverse criticism at a meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council last night. A letter was received from tho Drainage Board in answer to a request from the Council to be allowed to connect the Marshfield drainage to the Board's sewer in the Archhill Gully. The secretary of the Board stated that the application was granted subject to the conditions contained in the draft by-laws, which included the construction of an overflow chamber. Mr. H. Munro Wilson (the borough engineer) mentioned that the cost of the construction of the chamber would be about £15. On being asked as to the conditions in the by-laws, he said they referred to the overflow chamber. Mr. O. .1. Garland said this was the first time the question of an overflow chamber had been brought before the Council. He understood that, at Remuera the sewage pines had been reduced from nine inches to fix inches. Jf that were done at Grey Lynn, it would mean that a certain amount of the sewago would escape through the inspection chamber and contaminate the creek in the gullyMr. Garland then went on to refer to tho danger of typhoid from such a system during hot weather. Ho maintained that l' e sewage should lie carried right out to the sewer, and condemned the partially-closed system, mentioning that it had been abandoned in all the. older countries. The Mavor (Mr. W. J. Holdswor-.i thought that Mr. Garland had mado his protest rather late. Mr. Garland : Better late than never. Mr. G. Baildon said ho felt as strongly as Mr. Garland on the matter, but considered it was better to wait until they had got the plans before doing anything. The Mavor suggested that they should deal with the matter at a special meeting on Wednesday evening, when the plans would bo available. The meeting decided to adopt the Mayor's suggestion.
