It was a considerable time before any explanation of the occurrence was forthcoming, but eventually it transpired that an explosion had occurred on a small barge lying off Wvnnum, a water-ing-place 10 miles distant from the city. The Harbours and Rivers Department were carrying out certain improvements to the sea. front, and a small magazine Barge was anchored close by, in which explosives where stored. One of the employees visited the barge for the purpose of taking away a quantity of gelignite for blasting. He was in the act of lighting a lamp when the head of the match fell off and dropped into a quantity of inflammable material. He rushed away from the scene and managed to get under cover, but a moment afterwards a terrific explosion followed. The magazine was blown to pieces, debris being hurled in all directions, but the only linage was the wreck of the magazine.
