BIG CYCLING EVENT.
WARRNAMBOOL ROAD RACE. WON BY A VICTORIAN. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. Melbourne, October 1. The Warxnambool to Melbourne cycling road race (165 miles) was won by Piercy, of Victoria (47mins. handicap), with McSweeney, of West 'Australia (17mins.) ■second, and Perrett, of New South Wales (45min.) third. The winner's riding time was lOhrs. lmin. 21sec. The fastest time was made by L. Pianto, of West Australia, who covered the distance in 9hrs. 30mins. 46sec. The finish of the race was very close, Piercy only winning by 1£ lengths, while the third man was only a few yards away. Twenty thousand spectators witnessed the finish. The weather was threatening at the start, and a very strong northerly wind was blowing. The conditions afterwards improved. No fewer than 355 competitors started in the race, thus making a fresh record. Walsh and Neilson, of New Zealand, did not start. The record for the race is held by J. R. Munro (Vic.), who covered the distance on September 19, 1908, in 7hrs 12min. 51secs.
