WILL THE PLEDGE GO?
KEIR HARDIE'S DOUBTS. (Received October 2, 5 p.m.) London, October 1. Mr. Keir Hardie doubts if the Trades Union Conference in February will abolish the pledge, if substantial changes are involved. The Times states that the action of the executive is intended to make a better impression on trade unionists and the Government. If the recommendation is carried the principal grounds which influenced the Osborne judgment will be ostensibly removed, but it will leave untouched the real grievance, namely compulsion to support a politician whom some trades unionists detest.
