MOUNT EDEN BAPTIST SUNDAYSCHOOL.
The 45th anniversary of the Mount Eden Baptist Sunday-school was celebrated yesterday, the three services being largely attended. The preachers at the morning and afternoon services wero the Revs. R. Ferguson and 11. Ivnowles Kompton. In the evening tho Rev. Howard Elliott gave an earnest, address on " Importance of the Sunday-school in the Life of the Child of To-day," a crowded congregation being prosent. " At all, tho services special hymns wero sung bv the children, under the conductorship of Mr. Wilfrid Firth, the offerings being in aid of the Sunday-school funds. The public meeting will be held this evening, and to-morrow evening the scholars' annual entertainment will bo held, when prizes won will be distributed. FRANKLIN ROAD METHODIST CHURCH. Anniversary services were held yesterday in tho Franklin Road Primitive Methodist, Church. Tho special singing and the music proved bright and attractive, and largo congregations assembled at tho three services.
SEAMEN'S MISSIONS. A large congregation gathered in the hall, Albert-street, last evening. Captain Bazeley (the missioner) presided, and Mr. I.ong addressed the sailors briefly. The seamen joined heartily in t.ho singing of the hymns and seemed deeply interested in tho words spoken. A representative congregation of seamen was present at the Seamen's Institute last evening, when the missioner (Mr. A. P. Cowie) conducted divine service. At the after-meeting, a sea yarn was read to tho men by Mr. Graham. PROGRESSIVE THOUGHT. ■ Yesterday afternoon and evening the Rev. M. Walker lectured in the. Federal Hall. At three o'clock the subject was " Tho Driving Power of Spirit," and was dealt with in an instructive manner. In tho evening tho preacher spoke upon Missions," pointing out that Bishop Julius, in his recent utterances on this matter, had emphasised a great truth. People became too familiar with these earnest appeals, because they frequently look to tho missioner for intellectual entertainment only, forgetting that true religion consists in the constant and joyful recognition of our union with God. Tho remedy is culture and use of tho faculty by which we see God, and realise our Union with Him. THEOSOPHY. A largo gathering met at tho Theosophical Hall last night, when an interesting lecture was delivered upon " Self Culture and Some Comparisons." Tho object of self culture, said " tho lecturer, was to find and realise tho God within. The views of Channing and Mrs. Bosant on this subject were compared, and close correspondence was seen.
