THE BUTTER SEASON.

A GOOD BEGINNING. FIRST MONTH'S EXPORTS. Thk prospects for the dairying season are at present particularly bright. The steamer Turakina, which l'eft for London direct, on September 23, carried 7902 cases of butter. Following on this the Athenic, which left for London, via the South, on Saturday, took 5428 boxes of butter, and 97 boxes of cheese. The Athenic's shipment is especially encouraging, when the fact is taken into consideration that only eight days previously the Turakina sailed with her larg'-e consignment. It must not be forgotten either, that 1583 boxes comprised the Auckland shipment by the lonic, for Wellington, on. September 8. This makes a total of 14,913 boxes of butter for the opening month, up to October 1, as compared with 9970 boxes for the corresponding period of last year. The 1909 season showed an increase of 30 per cent. • over that of the preceding season, and the present indications seem to indicate that the 1910 s>eason will not only show a similar increase over last season, but will probably show a much higher percentage of progress. The season has opened rather earlier, and the butter is coming in much more freely than was the case last year, in consequence of the favourable weather and the plentiful supply of grass. As previously mentioned the Athenic's shipment represented a total for eight days. From this time onward, however, shipments will bo taken regularly every 14 days.
