MINING NEWS.

MOUNT WELCOME. SIXTY POUNDS OF PICKED STONE. The manager of the Mount Welcome mine, Coromandel, telegraphed as follows yesterday:—"About 601b picked stone— from No. 4 stope. 101b from No. 2 stope. . Gold left showing." In the course of his report for the week ended September 9, the manager states that tho main low level was advanced sft, showing tho reef inclined to be of. a flinty description. No. 2 stope was advanced 4ft, tho ground toward tho northern end of the stop© being harder. In No. 4- stope good country was being met with, and good results might be expected. THE GRAND JUNCTION. ROYAL REEF AT No. 5 LEVEL. [BT TELEGBAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Monday. This morning your representative visited the underground workings of the Grand Junction mine, and inspected the operations being carried out in the vicinity of the "fault," which cut off the Royal reef at a point rather over 700 ft east of the main south-east' crosscut. The Royal has now been stripped from the 600 ft to tho 690 ft crosscut, and the lode' shows an average width of about 15ft, with well-defined walls on either side. At tho 690 ft point the crosscut into the footwall of the reef has exposed a make of good ore fully 12ft in width south of tho footwall country, and the indications aro that the development will prove of considerable importance. Some little distance back from the 690 ft point a crosscut is being projected from the south wall, and in a few days this should be in touch with the body of quartz referred to. The probability is that this will provei to be either the George reef (which recently assumed a more northerly strike), making strong and.good, or the. Royal reef heaved back into the south wall by the disturbance which displaced tho lode going east. Should it be proved by development to be # the George, tho prospects aro that the main section of the lode carrying the values lies south of the seam which the drive has recently been' following going east. On the other hand, if it is found to be tho Royal, everything points to this latter body living east, and maintaining the good values carried up to the point where the country faulted. In this latter connection it may be mentioned that the country which, was slightly disturbed for a few feet past the fault, is again solid, and of the right description.

WATCHMAN. . £82 FROM 63 TONS. The -manager of the Watchman mine, Thames, telegraphed as follows yesterday afternoon:—"Tonnage, 62; value of ore before treatment, £95 19s 2d; value, amalgam, £57 10s Id; probable proceeds sale sand and slime, £24 13s 8d; approximate return, £82." The ore in question was obtained from the drive on the City of Dunedin reef, at, tho Royal Charter level, and was treated at the Waiotahi battery. OLD HAURAKI. The manager of the Old ftauraki mine, Coromandel, reporting for the week ended September 9, states: — 400 ft Level.—New reef: Advanced Bft. The reef has been smaller, but has opened out again, and is well mineralised, and a strong flow of water is coming out of the reef. Stoping No. 1 block— 1 stopo, advanced 6ft; total, 98ft. The reef at this point, has been divided, but should make together again in a few feet. No. 2 stope, advanced sft. Ten pounds of picked stono obtained. The reef is 9in in width, and looks well. No. 3. stope, advanced 9ft; total, 49ft. Ten pounds of picked stone won. No. 4 stope, advanced sft; total, 15ft. The reef is improving in size and appearance. No. 2 —No. 5 stope, advanced 7ft; total, 46ft. No gold has been seen. No. 9 stope, advanced 9ft; total, 31ft; no gold being seen. 300 ft Level.New reef: Advanced 7ft; total, 167 ft. The reef has boon small, but is making again. Stoning— stope advanced 14ft; total % 61ft. About. 51b of picked stone won. No. 1 stope, advanced 6ft; total, 39ft for 301b of picked stone. Gold has been left showing- in the back of tho stope. Rise, advanced sft; total, 15ffc. for 51b of picked stone. No. 1 stone north, advanced 10ft; total, 16ft. Strong colours of cold seen. 220 ft Level.— advanced to height for stope. Leading stope seaward, advanced Bft. Strong gold obtained. The reef is about 12in wide. The stone is close to where the gold was obtained in the level. MAY QUEEN. Reporting on tho 9th insfc. the manager of the May Queen mine, Thames, states that at the 1000 ft level tho ground along the side- of. the crosscut has been taken out for about 20ft, and tho 14in air-pipes placed in position and connected with the castiron bend attached to the pipes- in the shaft. Connecting the water-pipo to the casting for he jet is now in hand, and as soon as this is finished he will give it a trial. In the northern crosscut at No. 9 levol stoping is being carried on as usual on No. 4 lode and hangingwall _ branch leader, and a fair amount of crushing dirt j occasionally shelving nice dabs of gold is ; being won. < Tho'leading stope on tho north- , west lodo over the intermediate level is inj

progress, and a little gold is seen in the! quartz broken. At No. 6 level the quartz coming to hand from the hangingwall branch of No. 4- lode over tho intermediate level continues to yield a little picked stone, and is of a fair grade. At the battel crushing is in progress. WAIOTAHI. The manager of the Waiotahi Gold Min-*' ing Company reports for the week as follows:— No. 6 Level.—Tho stopes on the footwail dropper are being continued as usual. Tho reef is about 18in in width, and occasionally shows good colours of gold. No. 5 Level.— on the Cure reef has been in hand, the reef oeing about Bin in width, but no gold has been seen during the week. No. 4 Level.ln, the rise from the back of the stopes on the hangingwall loader wo are now cutting into both walls for a short distance, and if no quartz is met with E intend to stop work hero. On the main reeE above this level prospecting work is still in. hnnd. The Mary Ann No. 2 level crosscut is in a distance of 440 ft from the shaft, but no sign of the main reef has yet been met with. Preparation for sinking tho main shaft lias been in hand. The! necessary protection' for the men in sinking is now nearlv com- ' pleted. i

NOTES. The enlarging and retimbering of tho Saxon shaft, Thames, has been completed to 45ft below No. 2 level.

At the Cambria No. 4 level .in the Moana* taiari mine, Thames, the crosscut in the/ footwall is in 60ft, and is still in clean sandstone country.

The crosscut in the Reliance mine, Thames, has been extended Bft, and is in better country, with a good flow of water issuing from the face.

No. 5 stope on tho All Nations leader ire/ the Kuranui-Caledonian mine has been; driven 12ft in a nice channel of country, and the leader still makes patches of favourable mineral.

In the Albumin mine, Thames, the driver on the Dixon lode under the winze is in 13ft. and the reef, which is 4ft to sft in width, shows colours of gold at each break* ing down, but nothing in the form of picked stone. Indications, says the mine manager, are all that can bo desired for better results--

The main drive at the- 80ft level in th« Golden Pah mine, Coromandel, has been' extended 6ft in a splendid channel o£ country. The leader is making again on* the hangingwall, showing about 2in in width* of solid quartz heavily mineralised. In tho* intermediate drive, extended sft, the leader is about lin wide, with 'a bar of mineral running through it.

The drive on the Kapanga reef in the* Kapanga mine, Coromandel, is in 179 ft. Tlio reef whore worked upon during the pastf week has been much disturbed, owing to a/ " heave." This heave, however, is known to extend from the surface down to this level,, and, says the manager, it was north of it where the Albion Company got its gold. As the country is better mineralised and tha reef is now becoming more compact, he ex-« pects gold may be met with at any time.,* The drive for the footwall of the reef is ire 20ft in promising-looking country, with flail mineral heads dipping towards the reef.
