EXTENSIVE RACECOURSES.
PROTEST FROM MR. T. E. TAYLOR.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Friday. In the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr. T. E. Taylor, member for Christchurch North, said that a number of racecourses in the Dominion, including the Riccarton course, were much too large for the purpose for which they were used. If he had his way he would have the excess area, devoted to another recreation purpose. Referring to this matter later Mr. (I. Witty, member for Riccarton, denied that the grounds in question weie too extensive.
Mr. Taylor : Oh. yes, they are. Mr. Witty went on to point out that tho Riccarton reserve contained the largest course in New Zealand. It was one mile and a-half in length. Mr. Taylor : Too long. You should go in for -hoi ter races.
.Mr. Witty : If you were t-o go to races a little more it would broaden your mind (laughter)—and if you were to run round the course it would also broaden your mind and shorten your wind. (Laughter.)
