NEW SCHOOL AT RICHMOND.
■ ' m .; LAYING THE FOUNDATIONSTONE. ' The foundation-stone of the new school which is to be erected in Surrey Crescent, Richmond, was laid by the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, Minister for Education, yesterday afternoon. Mr. C. H. Sexton (chairman of the Newton Schools Committee) presided, and amongst those present, in addition to the Minister for Education, were the Hon. Dr. Findlay (Attorney-General and Minister for Justice), Messrs. C. J. Parr (chairman), G. Edgeeumbe, J. D. McKenzie, G. J, Garland, H. Barriball (members of the Board of Education)*, W. J. Holdsworth (Mayor of Grey Lynn), George' George (director of Technical Education), and J. Farrell (the Education Board's architect). Mr. Sexton, in calling upon the Hon. Geo. Fowlds to lay the foundation-stone, expressed the satisfaction of the committee and residents of Grey Lynn at the action of the Minister and the Education Board in securing such a large area as four acres for the school in such a suitable position. The Hon. Geo. Fowlds made special reference to the fact that' the erection of the school represented the first , public moneyspent in the Grey Lynn borough, which he had represented for so many years. In his opinion the site chosen was an excellent one, and he promised that if, as surmised, the building accommodation to be- provided proved insufficient, he would do what he could towards an extension. After the stone had been declared " well and truly laid," Mr. Parr pointed out that the Board of Education had undertaken a liability of close on £10,000 in providing the site and building, but he said that in his opinion the expenditure was well justified. The building, which had been ably designed by the Board's architect, would be constructed in brick, and would form one of the most up-to-date of its kind in Auckland. It would comprise six classrooms, capable of accommodating 350 children. The contractor for the erection of the structure was Mr. L. McKinstrev, his price being £2997. Short speeches were also delivered by Dr. Findlay and the Mayor of Grey ; Lynn. The gathering concluded with a vote of thanks to the. speakers. {,',
