PROGRESS OF GREY LYNN.
AN ADVANCING BOROUGH. Some facts; and figures "; illustrating the progress of the : borough of • Grey Lynn since it was first constituted a municipality under the name of Newton, in 1885, were given by the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, Minister for Education, in the course of his speech at the opening of the Grey Lynn school, at j Richmond, : yesterday afternoon. -'l- ;■■• r ■,-"■'' '.''.•■'■•■•. ■ • The ■population of the borough, according to the "census of 1886, was 1833 persons, and the number ■ of inhabited' dwellings 337. In 1906 the population: had. increased to 5882, and the number of inhabited dwellings to, 1125/ whilst the estimates for last year gave a population of 7465 and a total of : 1300 houses. - r It was estimated that of the total number of inhabited dwellings in 1909, about 1000 were occupied by the owners. During the past 24 years the sum of £39,000 has been expended on roads formation, drainage, arid other works. The ; ordinary revenue •{ of the borough had increased' from £2883 in. 1900 to £7829 in 1909, showing an increase of £4946. In the earlier year rates yielded £2522, and in the later year £5996 : . of the total revenue.' . ■■■/./; ._ - ". Some particulars of the transactions of the Newton and Grey. Lynn branches oil the Post Office Savings Bank were also given. In 1900 the number of new accounts opened was 139, the total deposited during that year being £10,381. ' In 1909 391 new accounts were opened. Thesumo:f £30,392 was deposited.
