GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
TO BE RETAINED OR CLOSED 7 I PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD. V A ©EruTATiON.from the Auckland Citizens', League waited on, the .« Mayor (Mr. CD. Grey) on Saturday morning, ,to protest against the action of the Government in closing Government House, at: Auckland, as an official residence for the Governor. The deputation consisted of Messrs. L. Andrews, W. :E. Hackett, C. P. Murdoch, R. A. ; Armstrong (secretary of the league), and Harrison. The Mayor-elect (Mr. L. J. Bagnall) was also present. " Mr. Murdoch stated that the matter had been discussed at a meeting of the general committee of the league, and it was decided to ask the Mayor to call a 'public meeting of protest. The retention of the Governor's residence would be beneficial in many, respects. The Prime Minister had stated that Government House in Auckland was only used for one month in the year, but the speaker thought that really the Governor would desire to stay in Auckland quite as much as in Wellington. With the facilities for transit between tne city and suburbs there was no need to have the University College building in the heart of the city. ■' ■" ; . '.';•; Mr. Andrews emphasised that the agitation- for the retention of the Governor's residence was very widespread. Mr. Hackett agreed that it was not just to sacrifice such a historic building as the Governor's residence, and one which meant a lot to Auckland, for the purposes of a university. • , The Mayor, while expressing sympathy with the deputation's views, said that as his term of office was just expiring it was a matter in which the Mayor-elect should act. Mr. Bagnall agreed that it was desirable that the opinion of a public meeting should be taken, and said he would be glad if the Mayor would call a meeting. , - This was agreed, to, and the meeting will 03 held in St. James's Hall on Wednesday evening. Mr. Grey is calling the meeting, but Mr. Bagnall, who will by that time have been installed, will preside. , , ,
