NEW TELEGRAPH LINE.

AUCKLAND TO WELLINGTON. A NEEDED RELIEF. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. The director of electric lines (Mr. J. K. Logan) states that the stretching of another two telegraph wires between Wellington and Auckland, which has recently been approved of by the Ministry, has been in contemplation for a year or two. At present there are two telegraphic routes between the two cities, one via New Plymouth and Utiku and the other via Masterton, Napier, and Taupo, both wires converging at Hamilton and continuing on to Auckland with distinct wires by the one line of poles. Mr. Logan states that these poles are overloaded. They are carrying about 20 telegraph wires, besides some trunk telephone wires, which is almost too much for them when contingencies are considered. From Drury north the case is much worse. It has been decided to erect a second line of poles between Hamilton and Auckland, to carry the new and perhaps some of the existing wires. The wires will be of copper, 4001b to the mile, and the route to be traversed will be the Main Trunk railway line. The new lines will start at Marton, and fee continued right through to Auckland city, a distance, of 310 miles, which will mean the stretching or about 56 tons of copper wire. The work will be commenced within the year.
