ICELANDERS AS RHODES SCHOLARS.
Icelanders in Western Canada have for many years been noted as hard-working students, and now for the second year in succession a Canadian of Icelandic descent, Mr. Joseph T. Thorson, has been awarded the Rhodes scholarship for Manitoba Last year Mr. Skuli Johnson, who is also of Icelandic descent, gained this coveted distinction. Mr. Thorfon has had a distinguished scholastic career at Manitoba College, . and, indeed, in every side of college Hie. In his first year he was awarded five scholarships, and in his second year he was awarded four. In his third year he was awarded one, all that there was. He will complete his fourth year in the spring of this year. In athletics ho has played in the senior and intermediate football teams, both teams being the city champions. He was also a member of the track team for his college, and played in the senior basketball team. He was the leading debater of Manitoba University, and has -represented his college in international debates. He has been closely identified with the literary society, with the' management of the college journal; and with the Y.M.C.A.
