" ;/THE NEW SHELTER; .' ,/'' ; The shelter for men -which the Salvation Army is about to erect on the ground' acquired by the ■ Army ~ authorities ' at r the comer of Lome and-: St. Paul's • Streets will contain several interesting features. One will be .a : ward . for the , accommodation of ' men : under the influence of liquor. At present it is necessary,- for the sake of 'the sober inmates, sometimes to r refuse drunken men..who seek accommodation; bub with the* new building it will be possible to receive l ■ them without inconveniencing the ; other, •*•;:. sleepers. : The shelter will; be a .-i three- ) storey building, in brick and concrete. The, land and structure' together will . cost • £6000, and of this £2500 is provided under : the will of the late Mrs. Knox. ;.; On the- ' ; basement will be the diningroom, reading- \ room, smokeroom, kitchen, laundries, and the ward for drunken men (with f100r... of ' rubberoid). On the second floor,will be, ; officers' quarters and bedrooms, and on the V- ' top 'floor a special ward, as a. ? memorial ;•;■ -- to the late Mrs. Knox, the .beds in which/ - will be absolutely free. ■', ■', In , this £ ward; ;; will be 18 beds, which is about the 'num-; bar which is now usually occupied by those ; ;.. who cannot afford to pay. \ The new build- .' ing will accommodate 130, against 74, the v capacity of the present shelter. . ■ The charges for beds will be,9d. (probably), 6d, : 4d, and nil. It is expected that the shel- •/, ter will be finished in August. >It is being r constructed by day labour.
