BEATING HIS WIFE.

A HUSBAND PUNISHED.

At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr.E. C. Cut-ten, S.M., a man named Ernest Pettersen appeared to answer charges of drunkenness, assaulting his wife, and with resisting a police officer in the execution of his duty. Evidence was given which showed that accused had gone to his home in an intoxicated condition, struck his wife with his fist, and with a bellows, and threatened to use a tomahawk upon her. The police were sent for, and accused resisted while the constable was arresting him. Mrs. Pcttcrsen was so much injured that she. was unable to appear in Court. Accused pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. DESERTERS FROM BARQUE DO RIDE. Ouiseppe Cennami and llr.ffaeli Unnellu were charger] with deserting from the Italian barque Doride. Each, through an interpreter, pleaded guilty to the charge. It was pointed out by Mr. A. P. Hidings that the defendants were undesirable immigrants, being unable to read in any language. He askvd that the men bo detained in custody until their vessel sails from Whangap.uapara. Accused were remanded in custody until the 21. d inst. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. William Henry Clarke was charged with failing to provide a horse aid a donkey with proper and sufficient food and shelter. Accused pleaded not guilty. After evidence had been given by several witnesses as to the poor condition of the animals, and the undesirable condition of the yard in which they were kept, the magistrate recorded a conviction, and lined the accused £2*and costs. REMANDED TO CHRISTCHURCH. William Brown was charged that on March 15, atChristchurch, he received the sifflSToT £13 from Scott Bras, by a false presence, in stating that a quantity of machinery sold by him to the complainants was his own, and that it was unencumbered. On the application of ChiefDetective Marsack the accused was demanded to appear at Christenurch on April 21. INTEMPERANCE. Sarah Vollbck, on a charge of drunkenness, was fined 10s, or 48 hours. William Thomas Hammond was charged with procuring liquor while prohibited, and was fined £2, or seven days. John Mills was similarly charged, and was also fined £2. or seven days. For a similar offence Eliza Monaghan was fined £i, or seven days, Kate Wallace was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and Alexander Reid was fined £1, or three days. BY-LAW BREACHES. Richard Marshall was charged that on March 19 ho allowed the chimney of his house to be on fire. A fine of ss, and costs 7s, was inflicted. Robert Henry Johnston was fined ss, and costs 7s, for allowing his horse to wander at large. On a similar charge Roderick George Mackay was fined a like amount. - Thomas Clegg was found guilty of tethering a horse in Falcon-street for the purposes of grazing, and was fined ss, and 27s costs. William Ward was fined ss. and 7s' costs on a charge of leaving a barrow standing in Vulcan Lane. For passing over a railway crossing with a horse and cart at other than a walking pace E. Hine6 was fined 5s and costs.
