AN ENGINEER'S APPRENTICES.

TWO CASES HEARD.

Tn the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., Messrs J. H. Adams were proceeded against on a charge of having discharged an apprentice named C. Vowell, owing to slackness of work, and with having failed to find him another employer, as required by the award. The inspector of awards (Mr. R. T. Bailey) prosecuted for the Department, and Mr. Ziman appeared for the defendants.

The evidence showed that the lad had started with employers at the Thames, and was next employed by Messrs. Hoiland and Gillet, and then with Messrs. Adams. The defence was that Vowell was not Employed as an apprentice. His" Worship said he was satisfied that Vowell was taken on by Messrs. Adams as an apprentice, and the transaction amounted in effect to a transfer of apprenticeship. It was to be regretted that 'he award did not provide for a written memorandum of transfers. The defendants were convicted, and fined £5 and :osts.

The same defendants were charged with ■having failed to pay an apprentice named Binns the award rate of wages. A deduction of 3s 3d had been made from the boy's wages, and His Worship held that it had been shown that the boy had been frequently away from work without sufficient cause, and the caw was a very trivial one. Boys should understand that they must not come and go' when they liked. The case was dismissed under section 16 of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Act.
