, V AN OLD OFFENDER At the Police Court yesterday, before Dr. J. F. Carolatv and Mr. C. Campbell, J.P.'s, an old woman named Kato inch was oharged with being an incorrigible rogue. SubInspector Hendrey stated that the accused, who is 73 years of ago, had appeared before the Court for various offences on innumerable occasions since the early eighties. Ho asked that the maximum penalty might bo inflicted, not so much as a punishment, but to keep the old woman out of harm's way. The Bench sentenced the accused to c 12 months' imprisonment. ~ , A DISORDERLY HOUSE. A young man named Joseph Brady and his sister Annie Brady wort; charred with being idle and disorderly persons. The male accused was also charged with keeping a disorderly house, and his sister with assisting in the management of the house. They were convicted and each fined £10, or three months' imprisonment. :'[ • ' . ' REMANDS. • Three youths named John Scott, Porcy Mercer, and John Whisker, whose ages ranged from 17 to 19 years, wcro charged with assaulting a Chinaman named Ah You. On the application of Sub-Inspector Hendrey, they were remanded for eight days. Bail was allowed, each of the accused having to enter into his own recognisances for £50. and to find two sureties for £25 each. William Albert Murray was charged with stealing a kit of carpenter's tools, value £2 2s 6d, the property of Amos Bentham. On the application of Chief : Dctective Marsack, a remand was granted till Tuesday, as further charges were ponding against accused. Bail was allowed in accused's own recognisances of £100 and two sureties in £50 each. Colin Jameson Duff, who was charged with theft, was remanded until Tuesday, bail being allowed in one surety of £25. An old woman named Kato Wallace, charged with procuring liquor while prohibited, and with entering licensed premises, was remanded until Thursday. A Maori named Matthew Pohipi, charged with obtaining the sum of. £2 from James Oorrie by false pretences, was remanded for eight days to appear at Blenheim. INTEMPERANCE. Three first offenders, charged with drunkenness, were convicted and discharged. James Smith was charged with drunkenness, and was convicted and discharged on payment of costs 17s 6d. James Stringer was fined 5s and costs on a charge of drunkenness. For a similar offence Mary Whittingham, Andrew Dodds, and Edward Ross Campbell wore each convicted and discharged. . James McQuoid pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness, and with wilfully damaging the uniform of Constable Murphy. A fine of £2, and costs 15s, was inflicted, and accused was ordered to nay for the damage done to the uniform. The alternative was one month's imprisonment. BY-LAW BREACHES. . George Walker was charged with leaving a horse and cart unattended in a public place without chaining the wheel, and was fined 10s, and costs 7s. For a similar offence William Carter was mulcted in a like amount. RHEUMATISM. ITS CAUSE AND CURE. ■Rheumatism is a most painful disease.
