Mr. Sommerville, formerly chief engineer of the Turakina, has joined the New Zealand Shipping Company's staff at Denny's yards, Dumbarton. Mr. J. G. S. Reid, late third officer of the Hauroto, has taken tin a similar position on the Kurow. Mr. K. 11. Scales, third of the Mokoia, takes Mr. Reid's place on the Hauroto. '" Mr. R. A. Williamson, of the Mokoia, has been transferred to the Te Anau as chief officer. Mr. W. Mcphaui, who brought the Kurow to Lyttelton from Newcastle, has gone as acting-second on the Mokoia. Mr. G. Thorpe, third officer of the Corinna. has transferred to the Kaniona in the same capacity. Mr. H. Claydon, third officer of the Kurow, is now third of the Corinna. It is understood that Mr. J. T. Company's Royal mail steamer Morea left Sydney for Auckland at 5 p.m. on {Saturday and will be due here on Wednesday morning next. TRANSHIPMENTS The s.s. Maheno, which arrived from Sydney yesterday, brought transhipments, ex Whakarua, from New York, Pericles from Lopdon, Empire, from Kobe, Westfalen and Oberhausen, from Germany, and Ville de la Ciotat, from Sydney and Marseilles. . .. FIFESHIRE FROM LIVERPOOL. It is now expected that the s.s. Fifeshire, from Liverpool, will leave Sydney on Wednesday next for Auckland, Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington. Her arrival at this port may be locked for about April 18. THE STRATHEARN ARRIVES. The New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Strathearn, Captain H. Mackay, arrived from Napier on Saturday morning to complete her loading of general cargo for London. She berthed at the ' Railway Wharf, and will be despatched for the Home port direct in a day or two. . THE SYDNEY BOAT. The s.s. Maheno, Captain M. Livingston, arrived from Sydney at 1 p.m. yesterday. She left Sydney at 2.45 p.m. on the 6th inst., and had Cape Marin Van Diemen abeam at 9.16 p.m. on the 9th, and arrived as above. She experienced fresh easterly to south-easterly winds, with smooth sea and fine weather throughout the ~ voyage. The Maheno, which berthed at Queen-street Wharf, will sail for Sydney at 5.30 p.m. to-day. THE MONOWAI. The Union Company's steamer' Monowai, Captain R. E. Smith, arrived from Southern and East Coast ports at 2 p.m. yesterday, after a fine weather trip. She moored alongside Queen-street Wharf, and will leave for Dunedin, via ports, to-morrow afternoon. ARRIVAL OF THE MAUI. The Gisborne Harbour Board's new dredge Maui— description of which appeared in Saturday's Herald—arrived from Renfrew, Scotland, via ports, at 7.30 a.m. yesterday, and being granted pratique berthed at the Hobson-street Wharf. , The Maui commenced her voyage on January' 2, and met with fine weather till in the vicinity of the Cocus Islands on March 5, when high seas were encountered, breaking on board the dredge fore and aft, but doing no damage. ■These conditions continued for two days, after which moderate to light breezes- prevailed till arrival at Fremantle on March 16. After coaling at Fremantle the Maui resumed her voyage, and experienced moderate to light winds and confused seas across the Australian Bight, arriving at Melbourne on March 27. Here a fresh supply of bunker coal was obtained, and on March 29 the dredge continued her passage. After leaving Melbourne she was detained for several hours at the heads, owing to a dense fog, and on (he trip across the Tasman Sea she met with light winds and heavy south-west swell until passing Cape Maria Van Diemen at 8 a.m. on Friday, when strong easterly winds and heavy seas prevailed until a few hours before reaching Auckland. The Maui also made calls at - Algiers, Port Said, Aden, and Colombo on the voyage out for bunker coal and stores. She will be floated into the Auckland Dock in a day or two for cleaning and painting, under the supervision of Mr. F. W. Blakey, and will then proceed to Gisborne,' where she will commence her work at-once. Captain Jas. Stewart is in'charge of the vessel, and will take her to Gisborne, but •the officers and crew will sign off the articles at Auckland, and a fresh crew will be signed on. SPITHEAD FROM NEW YORK. ■, The steamer Spitbead, Captain E. C. Tuckwell, arrived, from. New York, via Australia, at 1.10 p.m. yesterday, and being granted pratique berthed at' the Railway Wharf. The Spithead left New York on January 7, and experienced strong north-east winds. and heavy seas for seven days, thence fine weather until arrival at St. Vincent on January 22. Here the vessel took in a supply of bunker coal, and resumed her voyage on the following day. Fine weather prevailed until February 9, - when a heavy southerly gale and huge seas were- encountered for five days. The steamer rolled and laboured very heavily, and shipped seas fore and aft, but Escaped damage. The _weather moderated on the 15th. and fine conditions accompanied the steamer till February 20. On the following day, however, the,weather again 'became boisterous, strong westerly winds ' and heavy beam seas being met with. Fremantle was • reached on March 7, and as the vessel was unable to obtain a supply of bunker coal, owing to the recent coal strike, she proceeded to Albany; which port was entered on March 11. Here the Spithead filled her bunkers, and , took her departure for Melbourne on March 12.. arriving at the latter port on March 18. Nine days later: she sailed-for Sydney; where she arrived on March 29, meeting with strong winds and moderate seas on the passage. After discharging cargo she resumed her voyage to New Zealand ports, leaving Sydney on the 4th inst. for Auckland, and arriving as above. Moderate winds and. seas were experienced across the Tasman Sea and down the New Zealand coast. The Spithead is a vessel of 4697 tons register, and is owned by the Clyde Shipping Company, of Glasgow.
