FOOTBALL.

THE RUGBY GAME. Efforts have been made for some time to arrange for the visit of an American Universities, team to Australia this season. The Californions are willing, and the matter rests with the New South Wales Rugby Union. If the in ion could see its way clear to arrange it. the carnival of Rugby Union football in Sydney would be 'one ;of . the, greatest even known in the annals of the game. Tho Americans have made a great advance as players, and lieing men of remarkable physique, their presence would be inspiring to the devotees of the game. The colonial players in the few. Northern Union matches played on January 22 again occupied a prominent place in the scoring records. scored three tries, and placed five goals for Huddersfield. Rosenfeld. MeCabe. Anlezark, and Todd also scored for their respective teams, while, Charles Seeling, the New Zealand forward, played his first Northern Union game, and scored a try, in a Lancashire Combination , match at Wigan. 1 • A. T. Waddell, a member of the city district team, left last Wednesday for Napier, where he .will spend a few flays with his people, prior to continuing his trip to the States and England; He is a plumber, and hopes to gain much'experience in his trade while away. ' 1 _ . The local players are beginning to talk football in the cool of tho evening, and already nro'pects for the season are being discussed. It has been stated in some ouarfers t'<at. tno Ponsonby district club is likely to nut two senior teams in the field. It is rather oarlv, and rather hot, yet to discuss football seriouslv. The Athletic News of January 24 refers to the arrival of- Charles Seeling as the event, in Northern Union circles which took prido of pjace for tho week. The News goes on to say that . satisfaction, is , exnressed at Witran, for Seeling, oil his arrival, was perfectly free in every seme of the term, and had he so, desired could have signed for any club in the Northern Union. He is, however, a man of few words, and promptly accepted the generous offer ;of the Wigan club, played for the reserve team on Saturday. and is now eligible to take parti in this season's Challenge Cup.competition. That the resolution adopted by the Northern Union is not thoroughly understood in New Zealand is apparent from thoiact that Seeling brought, with ,him a permit from the Auckland League. This document was unnecessary, for, prior to his signing , for Wigan, Seeling had never played with miv Northerii Union team in tho colonics, or signed any New Zealand League registration form.

THE ASSOCIATION. GAME. All football clubs should endeavour to hold their annual meetings before the end of this month, os their delegates will he required to attend the association's annual meeting during the first week in April. An application has been received from the Ot.ahuhu Scouts for admittance into the association. If sufficient inducement is offered from Scout teams, no doubt the A.F.A. will have a division for Scouts alone. It is hoped other Scouts will join and give -their comrades nt Otaliuliu a contest each week. The secretary of the A.F.A. (Mr. Smithymail) has. received the annual report and balance-sheet, of the W.F.A. It shows that association to be in a sound position. Mr. Takle, the local treasurer, will submit to the annual meeting": a scheme for the insurance of players. Before tho meeting clubs will have the scheme placed before them, and they can then instruct their delegates how to act when the question is being dealt, with . by the governing body. Tho annual report and balance-sheet will be forwarded to all clubs before the end of the month. The association is on a sound footing, which proves conclusively that. the Management Committee have carefully done their work. It. is stated that Mr. Glaister, chairman, contemplates retiring from active work en the association. Ho has ably filled the position. ■/ ' ; -- General regret was expressed by all " socceritcs" when it became known that, Mr. Budd, of St. John's Club, had been drowned. His brother is also an exponent of the game. Much sympathy has gono out to those bereaved by the sad occurrence. As several members of the Management Committee intend retiring it is hoped that those interested in 1' soccer" and its management will see that a full committee is elected this season to carry on the good work commenced by the outgoing committee. At the annual meeting of the Caledonian Association Football Club it was reported that from a social as well as a financial standpoint the club had -had a most success fill season. The following officers were elected for the ensuing, season:—Chairman, Mr. Hilford; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Barber; committee,-Messrs. D. Cairns, R. Lawson, J. Seath, A. Edmunds, G. Uren.
