THE LATE BISHOP LENIHAN.

The death of ; Bishop Lenihan: inflicts a public loss upon the whole of the. Auckland district, for his fine Christianity and true Catholicity made him an influence for good among all sections of our people. To the Borrowing members of his, own community the blow is.heavy indeed, and they have in their affliction the heartfelt sympathy of fellow citizens of. every denomination. From the civic point of view, and here we all stand on common ground, Bishop Lenihan was the ideal prelate. With rare modesty and self-effacement, and with" a generous toleration which won the esteem and . respect of those who differed ■■■ most widely from him in creed, he. was among the foremost and most tireless workers in every, Auckland v movement having for its purpose the amelioration of distress and the improvement of human conditions. There was no better, example in this. city of the nobility of character which over-rides all petty and ignoble considerations, and finds it an easy thing to seek the good of all whilo remaining a loyal and devout upholder of one particular Church. The work which he has done, the kindly memory he has left, will remain to Auckland; and we may hope and trust that as worthy a successor will take up the burden he has laid down, and will continue unbrokenly the benign , influence exerted" by the deeply-regretted Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland.
