ROWING.

WEST ■ END 'TRIAL FOURS; Trial fours ' for trophies presented by Mr. .A. Bartlett. vice-president, were: held over the Bt. Mary's Bay course ony Saturday afternoon last. Though the finishes were not so close as generally seen at the club's- fixtures, some good racing m put up. In the first heat J. Bigelow, who won all the way, reached the post a length clear of O. Wright, N. Cato being close behind third.. Tha second heat resulted in a' r win for R. McDonald's crew, B. Keane, whose No. 3 'met"with" an" accident, which cost the crew the race, being second and L. Dixon well astern third. ; The next heat) was contested by four, crews, E. Macdonald, A. Carlaw, E. Hennelly, and W. Wright, -occupying the stroke seats. : Macdonald was very smart off the mark, and, v staving -off a challenge ..by Carlaw, managed to score a win by half-a-canvas. Hennelly, a length away, was third, with Wright; in close pursuit. The final was not such .a good race as might have been expected. :• R. McDonald's crew set oft" at a great pace, and, establishing a good lead, seemed to maintain it rather easily, eventually winning by nearly two lengths from E. Macdonald, iJ. Bigelow being close tip -third. The winning crew was made up as follows :— McDonald (stroHc), T. Harris (3), C. Dunning (2), R. Bigelow (1), and Culpan (cox). Mr. J. NORTH SHORE ROWING CLUB. The North Shore Rowing Club on: Saturday commenced trial pairs for trophies presented by Mr. L R. Phillipps, M.P. The No. 3 course on Cheltenham -Beach was selected as being, the -most favourable owing to the southerly; wind. Tho racing was very keen and the finishes verv close. Mr. C. McDonald ■ acted as 'starter and Mr. Sid. Harvey officiated as judge in the.absence of the donor. The first heat was won by R. - Spinley from Seagar's pair, who stopped rowing owing to a stretcher carrying away. In the second heat F. Bennett defeated P. 'Robertson,-and in the • third heat B. Johnston won from L. Fraser. The fourth heat saw E. Gilmour's pair win fairly ' easily from M. Logan, and in the last heat C. Clark won from R. Grubb by a'narrow margin. In the semi-finals on Monday-evening the racing" * was very spirited, and some fast rowing -was witnessed. R. Spinley defeated B. .Johnston by a margin of 6in after a very interesting race. F. Bennett won by -a length from E. Gilmour, who rowed well, but a more, dashing stroke in Bennett's pair reached home first. R. Spinley,'then met C. Cark, and from the word "Go!" a dingdong race ensued. A narrow margin of half-a-canvas claimed . Clark the winner. The final was then rowed, and this , also proved -to be a. great finish. Bow and bow together the. boats came at) ft great pace,, the rowers being very keen to get the honours. F. Bennett, with A. Powlcy and B - Goldwater (as coxswain), proved to be tho winners by half-a-length. The races ..were very interesting the onlookers taking a keen interest in the racing!
