ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER.
WAIKAREMOANA SCHEME. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Thursday. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night the Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar) referred to Mr. Nelson's report on the scheme for providing Napier, Wairoa, and is borne with electricity derived from Waikaremoana. He said the scheme deserved the most favourable consideration of the Council.
I Keplying to questions put- by councillors, the Mayor said they would have to take a poll of ratepayers to sanction the cancelling of the. loan of £16,000 to provide for the proposed scheme, and authorise the larger one. At the present juncture 'all the localities were affected. Napier had a loan authorised by the ratepayers: Wairoa also had a scheme in hand, but not yet authorised ; and Hastings was in the same"-position. Napier was exactly the same distance from Wai" karemoana" as Gisborne miles. " With power such as this," the Mayor remarked, "we will be able to establish industries and compete against America. It is only because they use their water-power that they can do things so cheaply." He said he anticipated no difficulty'in getting the ratepayers' sanction if the ' matter were placed' judiciously before them, and suggested that a committee or the town clerk be authorised to ascertain what amount of power could be sold locally - for ; establishing t industries. - Then they could meet and discuss the matter.
