A VISION OF THE NEAR FUTURE.
THE WONDERFUL APPLICATION OF THE INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE. -The Sphere. The term internal-combustion engine is to many, still a meaningless phrase. To the experts the engine is familiar enough, although they are generally incapable of LplaTn/ng Us distinctive ch.Leristics to the laity. Briefly it is an engine which burns or explodes its fuel within itself an no outs, e „ in ****** steam engine, where so much of the energy of the coal is lost. In the case of the petrol motor engine the energy of the fuel is almost wholly lued. I his on of using energy has oermitted the construction of engines lighter than mechanical engineers dared to think possible a few years ago, and as a consequence this » type of engine hns^been applied to a variety of uses impossible with the older types of steam and electrical engines. This pictorial view .of the near futur show an improved roadway upon which motor vehicles driven by the internal-combustion engine are progressing at various speeds In the air are petrol-driven ai ®°P lan ~ and dirigible balloons, and on the water are similarly driven torpedo craft and .mailer boats. The petrol engine has also been used for locomotion on rails m special cases. ' ,• u ,
