DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS. NOTES AND COMMENTS. t The fifth round of the Auckland Cricket Association's district championships was concluded on Saturday in fine weather and on good wickets. The scoring on the average was fair, and most of the games provided pretty good finishes. The highest individual score in the senior grade was N. Snedden's 54 (not out)—a capital display," though marred by ft couple of chances. Nobody else reached the half-century, though two or three other batsmen got into the forties. Bowlers had iri a .number of cases very good analyses, the most noteworthy performances being those of Taylor (who took eight wickets for 66 runs for University against Grafton), R. .Woods (four for 38 1 for Ponsonby against North Shore), and Belt (nine for 38 and four for 17 for Eden against rain ell). The University-Grafton match, which was continued on the Domain, provided the .best, finish of the afternoon, fortune seeming to favour first one side and then the other. , Grafton . had all. the afternoon in , which to make the 239 runs necessary to secure a win, and they set about the work in as business-like a manner as any of their supporters could wish. The first two wickets contributed 61, and the third-wicket partnership carried the score to 135. When this was hoisted on the board it was felt that Grafton had, indeed, more than a passing chance of heading University's score. University's good star, however, was' in the ascendant in the person of Taylor, who disposed of D. Hay and Gleeson in summary fashion, and five wickets had fallen for 138 and six for 149. For a time fortune again smiled on Grafton, Slonian and Goode taking the score to 182, but the last wicket fell \tith University 23 runs to the good. i. ; ( E. Horspool (47), K. Neill (41), and Goode (37) deserve the most credit among the Grafton men, for with the exception of Jones and Sloman, who each made 25, they were the only ones to occupy the bowling crease for any length of time. Taylor's fine bowling was the subject of much comment, and this performance probably had ft good deal to do with his getting a place in the representative team to meet Wellington on Boxing --V- , The game between North Shore and' Ponsonby, which was concluded on the Devonport Domain, resulted in a fairly easy win ; for North Shore. P. White played a good open game for h»s score of 42, and L. H. Hemus gave a characteristic display for 36, but only one other Ponsonby batsman (Snedden) reached 20. • «» • ' North Shore, who had scored 221 in the first innings, went, to the wicket again, but ..lost seven wickets for 89 runs, and then declared their innings closed, sending Ponsonby in again on the off chance of getting them out again before time. In this, however, they were unsuccessful,"Ponsonby hitting l up 133 for the loss of five wickets. Of this N. Snedden and It. Woods contributed 94 between them, both playing bright crisp cricket. ' Parnell, who on the previous Saturday had lost seven wickets for less than ICO, succeeded in topping Eden's 102 easily enough, the last three: wickets putting on 48 runs. 0. Olliff, who resumed batting with about 20 to his credit, succeeded in making 31 when he succumbed to one from Keif. 11. Caro, who made 21, and Fairburn 19 (not out) were the other principal contributors to the total. . Eden went in again, and by very creditable bat ting scored 126 for the loss of three wickets and then closed their innings in the hope . Chat; they would be able to get their opponents out again before play ceased. The start was promising, three Parnell wickets : falling for next to nothing, hut Olliff and Fairburn managed to stave off., disaster long enough to put all possibility of defeat out of the question. . • . .• Self's bowling in this match was sensational, and his performance is one that,is seldom met with. In Parnell's first innings he captured nine wickets (all but one) for the trifling cost of 38 runs, and in the second innings he captured four out of the five wickets which fell for 17 runs. This' gives a total of 13 wickets for 55 runs—an average of a little over; four per wicket. A team from the Waikato will Journey down to Auckland on Christmas Day and meet a local' team. The Auckianders are putting a fairly strong eleven into the field r against them,' though it is, not intended .to pit them . against . anything like Auckland's best. The following is, the Auckland team chosen to meet the visitors:—E. V. Sale, N. Snedden, K. Gordon, R. Woods, P. White, Goode, Gray, W. McMath, W. Dinnison, J. . Gavin, ;1. Clarke, George Court; umpire, Mr. H, stone. Play will start as soon after 10' o'clock as possible. '

At a match between Franklin Road and All Saints', played the other • day, V the former, who went in first, scored 63 (Dlmery, 15) and 98 (Isbister 32, Booth 15, Webster 13, and Moore 10). Bowling ;• for All Saints' F. Wilson i took eight wickets for 69 runs, Hamilton three for-29,, and Avery , three for 2. In their first, innings All Saints' made 90 (F. • Wilson 1 24, - Baker . 17, V and C. Wright 14), and in the second innings they scored! 74 for the loss, of one wicket (F. Wilson 34 npt Q'ii, H. Wright 27, and C. .Wright 9 not out),. Bowling for Franklin .Road Thompson took four wickets for 61 runs, Moyle three for, 24, Dimery two for 8, and Isbister twof for i 31. '.'All Saints' won by nine wickets. $ ~,? /* , On Saturday last the Mauku f cricket , team paid a visit to Drury and were ' defeated Iby a .few runs. Drury took the field and dismissed Mauku for 50, Cuff'making 16. < Drury's innings produced 65," Williams (19) being the most 'successful batsman. C. Clarke, of Drury, : took ' six wicket* for 17 runs, and Roulston/ of Mauku, five for 11. The cricket match < between City and r Frankton on Saturdayresulted (writes our Hamilton corresppndent) in an easy, win for the ( latter, the iscores being: City (who could muster only I six , players). 12 and 25; Frankton, 53 and 60. , ,
