THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS.

THE snow in the country is soft and white, But the snow in the city is mixed with soot; Grimy and vile on the trodden pave, Black and wet in the frozen rut. By broken window and battered door The flakes go whirling on Christmas Day, But find 110 spirit of Christmas there, Not even so much as a holly spray. But came a coach to the narrow lane, And a form of beauty and grace divine, With trailing garlands of mistletoe And wreaths of holly and sprigs of pine. And cape and shoes for the little boys, And shawls for the mothers, worn and gray; And hoods and cloaks for the little girls— And she was the spirit of Christmas Day. MINNA lEYING.
