Prospects for" a good harvest in Canterbury are particularly bright. Nearly 1000 bales of wool are being railed weekly from Featherston to Wellington. It is stated that W. Webb intends to challenge R. Amst to row another race for the championship of the world. The weather at Rotorua lately has been most unfavourable for fly-fishing, but notwithstanding this good sport has been obtained, one angler landing 25 trout in two and a-half hours one nignt. Some of the fish were rather small, but all were in good condition. A telegram 'from Waipukuran states that Messrs. Chambers and Booth, the local patentees, are negotiating witth the Lord Mayor of Sydney to light that city with " Dreadnought" gas by the beginning of January. The light is a great success in Waipukurau. According to the Wairarapa Daily Times Mr. J. 0. Bid will, of Pihautea, has had a record wool clip this season. He has shorn 7000 Romney sheep, which have produced an- average yield of 111b soz of .wool. At current lates it is estimated this is equal to about 13s worth -of wool per head. The 205 bales he has for the market ought to bring in considerably more than £4000 in revenue. , A good story is told by , the Wairarapa Daily Times of a " new chum from the Old Country who recently arrived in the Manawatu district. He was told to milk a cow. But he had his own peculiar idea of milking and the cow was not used to it. A selfrespecting cow prefers to be milked from the side. The new chum in question approached the cow from behind, and essayed to "•-'lb her through her hind legs. It was a very rueful young man that picked himself up a few seconds later.
